Prior to picking, consider these questions:
1. Do you and your partner already have a song but don't realize it? Maybe it was the song playing the first time you kissed, the first time you danced, or when he proposed. Perhaps it's a bit less obvious. Did you two go to a concert together and share the love of a certain song? What about that tune that you both croon when it comes on the radio?
2. If you don't already have a song, is there a song you both love? Start with genre. Do you both love R&B? Talk about your favorite bands, is there one in common you didn't even know you both liked? Is there a song that band sings that fits the mood?
3. What is your wedding theme? Pick a song that complements it e.g. Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls for an indie/bohemian wedding
4. What do you want your first dance to say? Look at the lyrics of popular songs or discuss the message you want to send. Is it how much you love one another? Or maybe that this will be a happily ever after? Perhaps you want, instead, to relish the moment rather than the future. Decide this, and then search for songs that speak to that message.
5. Do you want a contemporary song or a timeless tune? There's something to say for both. Contemporary songs are fun to look back on in 50 years when they're no longer popular. They tell a lot about the year in which you got married and what you were like as a couple. On the other hand, timeless tunes are still around for a reason.
*Make sure it's easy to dance to and that it's three minutes or less!
