NotesDid you know? Pinatas are typically thought of as a fun activity for parties and celebrations, including occasional wedding crafts, but they have a long, rich history. Perhaps quite surprisingly, there is evidence pinatas have Chinese origins. The Chinese pinata was typically in the shape of an ox or cow and used to ring in the New Year. Instead of the toys and candy you see spilling out of a pinata these days, the Chinese version was filled with five types of seeds and hit with sticks of various colors. The European pinata tradition was brought to Mexico in the 16th century and carried religious significance, however, all religious associations have since disappeared. Today in the United States, pinatas have become a popular decoration and activity during the Christmas season, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and birthday parties.
